Along with comics, movies, toys and video games I really, really love music so I thought I’d chuck up a few tunes that are currently on repeat in my playlist at the moment.
First up are Last Dinosaurs, a local band from Brisbane, and their awesome single Honolulu. With it’s rippling, plucked guitars, shouts of “Hey!” and wonderful, summery chorus it’s a feel good tune and a half. Echoey harmonies float through the air and it’s stop/start rythm is infectious. If you like The Drums then you should definitely check out Last Dinosaurs.
Yeah, yeah, I know you’ve probably all heard Foster the People’s Pumped Up Kicks by now. God, this video alone has 26 million hits on You Tube so I’m probably just preaching to the converted here, but this is such a bloody good tune. The mega-catchy chorus tied with such dark subject matter makes it one of the most subversive pop songs in ages. And it features the best use of whistling in a song since Peter, Bjorn & John’s Young Folks.
Last but by no means least we have Lykke Li with her song I Follow Rivers. Trip hop meets straight up pop in this spacey, spectral number as the sounds of the sea wash you in to clattering drums and descending synth patterns. There’s a Magician remix that adds a layer of piano house pop to the original that’s great for the dancefloor, but removes any sense of the originals haunting spookiness.
