“Wow”! Just…”Wow”! Cloud Atlas wasn’t even on my radar until 10 minutes ago when I saw this trailer, and it’s now jumped to the top of my “must see” list. Based on the award-winning novel by David Mitchell, starring an absolutely stellar cast (including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving and Jim Broadbent) and directed/produced by the Watchowski’s (The Matrix trilogy)and Tom Twyker (Run, Lola, Run and Perfume) this is wildly ambitious stuff.
From a quick Google to find out the plot synopsis it appears that the story covers six distinct time periods (past, present and future) with an intertwining narrative linking each segment, sometimes explicitly and at other times more tangentially. The trailer reminds me a lot of both Aronofsky’s The Fountain and Malick’s Tree of Life, but appears to be even wider in scale and scope than either of those movies (and that’s saying something). Beyond that I almost don’t want to learn any more, in case some of the information spoils the movie for me.
