PRODUCT WARNING: Cocoa mulch may harm your dog.
Cocoa mulch, derived from the cocoa bean, is a fine, sweet-smelling, garden mulch that, while brilliant for your yard, can potentially cause serious harm to your pet (especially dogs). It is sold in MOST garden supply stores and often will not feature warnings on its packaging.
Unsurprisingly, cocoa mulch smells like chocolate - which is enough to send the average pooch on a serious munch out. No matter how well trained your dog is, the minute your back is turned they will face the temptation of hooking into this stuff like they are a pothead on a midnight fridge raid.
The reason your beloved, furry, little shit machine cannot eat this mulch is the same reason they should NEVER be fed chocolate. Cocoa beans contain several stimulants, including caffeine and theobromine.
Dogs are extremely sensitive to these two chemicals and even a low dose can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal bloating and pain. High doses can cause increased heart rate, muscle tremors, seizures and, the hardest thing of all to recover from, death.

Knowing what you should eat and what you should avoid is steadily becoming rocket science. There are the "Grade B" style food types that we know we should avoid, such as the Bacon Deluxe from Hungry Jacks - sporting a WHOPPING 50 grams of fat per burger... then there are food types that really test our knowledge (grains, legumes etc). And then there is yet another category still... the category that tests our patience: for years doctors have been advising that we should eat lots of food type X, then later advise us to avoid it. The thought of what they'll tell us about microwaving food 50 years from now almost makes my skin crawl.
At the end of the day, the truth of the matter is that you are what you eat. Consequently, you should seriously consider whether or not you should eat garlic:
